A unique opportunity to own a piece of 20 th century design history: an original bed No. 101/ No. 17 (circa 1935/36) from Ateliers Jean Prouve as designed for the Lycee du Metz (Lyceum in Metz , France ). Documented on pages 111-113 of The Complete Works of Jean Prouve Volume 2 (1934-1944) by Prof. Peter Sulzer. The Lycee du Metz was a boy's boarding school in eastern France , for which Prouve designed the interior spaces and all furnishing and fixtures. This model bed was designed especially for the dormatories of the oldest boys (thus the measurement of 1.90 meters x 80cm) as well as for the infirmary. The dormatory models were painted Prouve teal blue, while the infirmary models were white. Like many Prouve pieces, due to its very utilitarian intent, this bed has been repainted at least once in it's life. Design is steel, comprised of four parts: headboard and footboard of equal height made of double-facing sheets - each welded without a visible joint in a tube frame that has a large aluminum handle on the upper portion. Two side supports fit between headboard and footboard to hold the mattress. The mattress springs and screws are missing, however, to my knowledge these elements were standard size and the standard issue of the day; tfore, they were not designed by Prouve and can be replaced with preferred hardware. With the addition of pillows or bolsters, this single bed (perfect for children's or guest room) could be converted for use as a day bed. Please note the condition, it is being sold as is. The eight bolts that hold it together are not orginal, however they can't be seen when assembled with a mattress in place. It shows some slight runs in the paint, as well as a very slight amount of surface corrosion in spots, as it has been in storage for years. The condition is absolutely typical of vintage Prouve items. Original Prouve pieces are rare, expensive, and not often found on Ebay. This is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of history from a French design Icon. I will not ship this item. Buyer is responsible for arranging shipping through a full service company such as Plycon Van Lines. Local pick-up is welcome. Payment is due within seven days of auction close. Cashiers check, money order, or Paypal are the only accepted forms of payment. Buyers with no feedback or more than one negative feedback must contact me before bidding. Bid with confidence!
