(DAVIS,JEFFERSON F.) (1808-89) Confederate President; U.S. Secretary of War – FranklinPierce Administration – 1853-57 Manuscript Letter , 8” x 10”, SECRETARIALLY written and singed for the future Confederate president while he was serving as U.S. Senator from Mississippi. In this one-page communication, Senator Davis recommends an applicant to the “Hon[orable] S.W. Downes,” to whom the letter is addressed on the integral leaf. “Washington, D.C., Jan[uary 16 th [18]50. Gen[era]l Downs. Dear Sir, I have the pleasure to introduce Thomas J Johnston, Esq[uire], formerly a democratic editor of Mississippi, now a clerk in the United States treasury department. Mr J., in anticipation of editorial connection with the democratic paper at Baton Rouge, desires to make your acquaintance. I commend him to your courtesy as a gentleman of political zeal, intelligence, and ability, and will acknowledge your attentions to him as a personal favor to myself. Very truly, your friend, Jeffn. Davis.” Although it cannot be determined with certainty, several features of the handwriting strongly resemble those exhibited by Davis’s wife Varina, who wrote and signed countless letters for her husband in the years after the Civil War. Most notable are several upper-case Ds and the period after “Davis,” which Varina routinely used when signing for her husband.
