Offered for your consideration is an exceptional matched pair of vintage Jensen model C10PF 10 inch “Flexair” woofers that were original equipment in their TF-4 loudspeakers from 1964. As you probably know, Jensen was one of the largest domestic speaker manufacturers and a major supplier to the U.S speaker industry from the late 1930’s through the 1980’s. Based on the EIA source/date codes on the baskets’ flange, “220 420”, these long-throw bass drivers were made by Jensen (220) in the 20th week of 1964, and are notable as being some of the industry’s first ceramic-ferrite magnet drivers. Please see the large photos I’ve taken for your review, and then I’ll tell you more about these pristine woofers. These speakers are in excellent condition —the finest examples of this model I’ve ever seen. The cones are made from sturdy paper and are structurally flawless and the voice coil dustcaps are perfect as well. In addition, they have permanent textile surrounds, further strengthened by a factory poly coating. And, the black-coated steel baskets are also in great shape with no oxidation and the factory flange gaskets are nicely preserved as well (note the factory tape covering the gasket seams; a nice touch). In addition, the +/- terminals measure the industry standard .205”, are marked for polarity, and have never been soldered on the spades. Quite simply, these bass drivers are collector-grade . They’ve been fully tested and sound very clear and detailed with a nice vintage tone and no rubbing or other sonic issues. They were crossed over to the mids at 600Hz in the factory application, so I figure they’ll carry to at least 800Hz-1KHz. And, since this platform was designed in the tube-amp era, they’re very efficient and are able to reach listening volume with very low input wattage. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a perfectly -matched 5.5Ω each, in line with a nominal 8 ohm rating of yesteryear (they’d be called a 6 ohm driver today). Lastly, the baskets measure 8⅛” diameter, stand around 4⅝” tall, and the mount hole spacing is 7” adjacent (skipping a hole) / 9¾” diagonal, c-t-c. These are a super find for someone that needs similar 10” bass drivers as replacements in their Jensen, Heath, Ampex, or many other U.S.-made speakers from the 1960’s-70’s—you'll find none in finer overall shape! Plus, and they’d make a super choice for a vintage driver three-way speaker project for tube amp or modest-power solid state applications.
