This is a rare promotional broadside advertising the play featured in Act One of the classic JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical comedy "SHOW BOAT" which played the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City. (The production opened December 27th, 1927 and ran for 575 performances.) ..... This masterwork by JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II remains one of the greatest of all musicals and possibly the greatest musical theatre score to date. The story starts in the 1880's on one of the many American riverboats that featured traveling shows. This broadside which was inserted into the oversized programs for "SHOW BOAT" promotes the play within the play, "THE PARSON'S BRIDE" starring Miss Julia La Verne (played by HELEN MORGAN) and Mr. Steven Baker (played by CHARLES ELLIS). "Show Boat" follows the lives and loves of the troupe that work aboard the Cotton Blossom under the command of Cap'n Andy (played by CHARLES WINNINGER) and his wife Parthy Ann (played by EDNA MAY OLIVER). In Natchez they come up against racial prejudice when the sheriff discovers that the leading lady, Julie, is a half-caste. He does not allow mixed shows in his town.
