This historical and genuine original item was amongst the extensive, 45-year John "Michael" Shively militaria collection I recently obtained last Fall from his father when his single son died of a massive heart attack in Princeton/Trenton, NJ. His 86-year old father lived not too far from me here in Virginia and saw my ad in the local paper wanting to buy military items. The "shive" was a discriminating collector who paid a premium for what he wanted. I now have thousands of old military-related photographs, albums, letters, signatures, insignia and documents mainly from the Civil War, WWI to Vietnam with an emphasis on American and German Third Reich WWII "High-End" paper ephemera. What I've uncovered is incredible, articles that have never seen the light of day because this collector hoarded everything he bought from the late 1960s through the mid 1990s, however, my job is to spread everything to the Four Winds. Why, I even discovered 44 amazing Civil War letters, mail order bought in the 70s and 80s, many with "killer" content. I have well over a year's worth of eBaying ahead of me, so please stay tuned.
Here we have an unprecedented opportunity to to obtain 32, that's correct, thirty-two, genuine signatures of many of the crew members of the historical April 18, 1942 USAAF Doolittle Raid on the Japanese mainland. Originally, 80 brave Raiders took off in 16 heavily-modified Mitchell B-25 bombers and most survived the harrowing experience and lived to tell the story. I don't know the circumstances of exactly when or where Shively obtained these hand-signed signature cards, there was nothing in association with them to indicate origin; my guess is that in the late-1980s to early 90s, he may have attended a major air-related show where perhaps these Veteran Doolittle Raid survivors were guests and they signed cards for military history aficionados. I've assembled the signature cards in the order of the flight crews and they are: Crew #1, Lt. R.E. Cole, Co-Pilot. Crew #2, Lt. Carl R. Wildner, Navigator. Crew #3, Lt. C.J. Ozuk, Jr, Navigator. Crew #4, Lt. E.W. Holstrom, Pilot -- Lt. Harry C. McCool, Navigator -- Cpl. Bert M. Jordan, Engineer-Gunner (please note that there are two signed cards for Jordan so you get a bonus additional signature card). Crew # 5, Capt. David M. Jones, Pilot -- Sgt. Joseph W. Manske, Engineer-Gunner. Crew # 6, Lt. Charles J. Nielsen, Navagator. Crew # 8, Lt. Robert G. Emmens, Co-Pilot -- Lt. Nolan A. Herndon, Navagator -- Sgt. David W. Pohl, Engineer-Gunner. Crew # 9, Lt. Harold "Doc" Watson, Pilot -- Lt. James M. Parker, Jr, Co-Pilot -- Lt. Tom C. Griffin, Navigator -- Sgt. Wayne M. Bissell, Bombardier. Crew # 10, Lt. J. R. Stork, Co-Pilot -- Lt. Horace E. "Sally" Crouch, Navigator-Bombardier -- Sgt. Edison W. Horton, Jr, Gunner. Crew # 11, Lt. Frank A. Kappeler, Navigator -- SSgt. William L. Birch, Bombardier. Crew # 12, Lt. Wm. M. Bower, Pilot -- TSgt. Waldo J. Bither, Bombardier. Crew # 13, Lt. Edgar E. McElroy, Pilot -- Lt. R.A. Knobloch, Co-Pilot -- Lt. Clayton J. Campbell, Navigator -- Sgt. Robert C. Bourgeous, Bombardier. Crew # 14, Lt. James H. Macia, Jr., Navigator-Bombardier. Crew # 15, Lt. Griffith P. Williams, Co-Pilot -- Lt. H. A. Sessier, Navigator-Bombardier -- Lt. T. R. "Doc" White, M.D. -- Sgt. Edward E. Saylor. Please note that there is no representation of any of the members of Crews # 7 and # 16. Perhaps none of them were able to attend the signing or they had passed away. I don't know how many Raiders were alive way back when Shively obtained these signatures. Please correct me if I'm wrong; I believe that the only crew member alive today among these 32 is R. E. Cole, the Co-Pilot of the first plane, piloted by Jimmy Doolittle. We all truly owe these 80 heroes a great debt of gratitude for their devotion to duty and country, the USA. I personally guarantee the authenticity of these signatures because I know where they came from. Starting price is$99.99 with no reserve. Don't delay, this is a never before off...
