Faced with impending defeat, Adolf Hitler launched a last offensive to drive a wedge, or "bulge" into Allied lines and prevent invasion into Germany. On December 16, 1944 Allied forces were caught unprepared when Nazis attacked the Ardennes Forest on the Western Front. Winter t was the coldest, snowiest one in memory and Allied strategists stationed few troops at Ardennes, never calculating it as a stronghold Hitler would target. Although the Germans successfully pushed back Allied troops, no ground was given up without a fight. Shear determination and unwavering courage gave the Allied troops strength to endure until reinforcements arrived. American troops and their Allies outfought, outsmarted and outlasted German Opponents to end the historic conflict on January 28, 1945.
