Map of Monterey California’s Playground This auction is for a pictorial Map of Monterey, California, called "California's Playground" by Jo Mora. Per an Internet search this is one of the scarcer maps by Jo Mora. This large folded map is 22X30 inches. The map has a decorative border illustrating the history of the Monterey area. The centerpiece of the map shows several points of interest such as Carmel Highlands, Del Monte Golf Course, Pueblo de Pacific Grove, Carmel, El Del Monte Lodge, Del Monte Forest and El Rio Carmel. Mora obviously had a pretty good sense of humor as depicted in several of the little vignettes. Written in the upper right hand corner: “ To His Excellency the Count of Monterey: This limned Map and history of his own harbor and peninsula discovered by Viscaino AD 1602. Occupied by Portola AD 1770: showing its points of interest, its manifold allurements ~ and the Properties being developed by the Undersigned ~ is humbly Dedicated by your Excellency's Obedient & most humble Servt's ~ The Del Monte Properties Compy. All the foregoing and attending being the Gospel Truth - and limned without error or omission ~ in so far is my power to detect ......I.....the Count of Monterey do hereby row my approval. my satisfied acceptance. and affix my signature hereto in proof." 1710-1926. The condition is fragile. Due to being folded for all these years, it is coming apart in several sections, but is still in one piece. There is a small piece missing along one of the folds and another smaller piece farther down (I tried to get pictures of both). Color is faded and not as vibrant as it probably once was, but it's better than photos indicate (it was extremely difficult to get good pictures). There are minor rips or tears along the edges. Per Wikipedia: “ Joseph Jacinto "Jo" Mora (1876-1947) was an Uruguayan-born American cartoonist , illustrator and cowboy , who lived with the Hopi and wrote extensively about his experiences in California . He was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He has been called the "Renaissance Man of the West". Please email if you have any questions.
