Joseph Jacob Foss born April 17,1915. In 1940 he enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet program, eager for combat, he qualified in the Gruman F4F-4 Wildcats, and in October 1942 he went to Guadalcanal as executive officer of Marine Fighting Squadron 121. His Squadron became known as the Flying Circus. By the time Foss left Guadalcanal his Flying Circus had shot down 72 Japanese planes with 26 credited to himself. As a America,s ace of aces he was awarded the Medal Of Honor. After the war he served 2 years in the South Dakota legislature and in 1955, as the Governor of South Dakota. Joe Foss died on January 1,2003. Listed for auction is a autographed 5x7 b/w Portrait of Joe Foss in uniform.
