This is a figural Black Americana piece made by the Austro-Hungarian potter, Johann Maresch. It show a well dressed black man sitting on a tree stup. This was part of a series of black figures made around 1890. With the European countries setting up colonies in Africa, the black man became some what of a celebrity. This gentleman is dressed as a fine European upper middle class person would be dressed. He is wearing a finely tailored tan suit with a matching waist coat that even has a watch. He is dressed in a fancy white shirt with a bow tie. He is sitting on a tree stump in a relaxed mode holding a cigar in his extended right hand. His head dons a slylish cap and his feet has wonderful boots. This rare piece is approx. 11 inches tall. It is in excellent condition with slight wear. The bottom of the jar is marked "JM 6458". I require insurance on pieces shipped. A great addition to any collection. Sorry for any flash glare.
