This book is signed in several places (and stamped) by its owner, John Augustine Washington (1820-1861), the last family owner of Mount Vernon. This book actually was part of the family library in 1834, as shown in the scan. The book is an 1833 edition of the Greek and English Dictionary , published in Boston by Hilliard, Gray, Little, and Wilkins. As you see, John A. Washington wrote on the book quite a bit--and signed for times on the inner board and flyleaf. The book itself does have some light foxing on some pages, and the leather cover boards are a little scuffed. Bind is good. An attractive book with obvious historical value. Selling as is. John A. Washington was the Great-Grandnephew of President George Washington. He was descended from the President's brother. After the death of his father, he owned Mount Vernon himself until 1859, when he sold it to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Two years later, as an aide de camp to General Robert E. Lee, he died on patrol in western Virginia. High bidder to prepay within 15 days of close of auction plus $4.50 priority mail shipping. Comes with page from magazine as shown. No reserve--but it is worth well over the bid I've set.
