Offered with no reserve is a remarkable and extremely rare volume, the highly desirable first edition of the ‘Works’ of John Bunyan, printed in folio at London by William Marshall in 1692, the only folio edition of any of Bunyan’s works printed during the 17th century, as well as the only collected edition of Bunyan’s works printed during the 17th century, adorned with a fine double-page folding engraved ‘Mapp Shewing the Order & Causes of Salvation and Damnation,’ comprising fully 20 different works, 10 of which were published for the first time in this volume, and bound in full 20th century brown morocco. The volume may be referenced as Wing B5479 and by ESTC online system number 006102617. � THE VERY RARE FIRST 1692 COLLECTED EDITION OF THE WORKS OF JOHN BUNYAN, INCLUDING 10 WORKS PRINTED FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND 10 FURTHER RARE AND IMPORTANT WORKS. THE VOLUME INCLUDES THE DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVED ‘MAPP SHEWING THE ORDER & CAUSES OF SALVATION AND DAMNATION.’ THIS IS THE ONLY FOLIO PUBLICATION OF ANY OF JOHN BUNYAN’S WORKS DURING THE 17TH CENTURY. � 17TH CENTURY IMPRINTS OF JOHN BUNYAN’S WORKS ARE EXCESSIVELY RARE ON THE MARKET, WITH NO COMPLETE COPIES OF THE PRESENT VOLUME (AND ONLY 2 INCOMPLETE) AT AUCTION SINCE 1977. � The full title reads as follows: � “The Works of that Eminent Servant of Christ, Mr. John Bunyan, Late Minister of the Gospel, and Pastor of the Congregation at Bedford. / The First Volume [the only volume that was published], / Containing / Ten of his Excellent Manuscripts prepared for the Press before his Death, never before Printed, and Ten of his Choyce Books formerly printed, Viz. / Manuscripts. / An Exposit. On the Ten first Chapt. Of Gen. / Justification by Imputed Righteousness. / Paul’s Departure and Crown. / Israel’s Hope encouraged. / The Desires of the Righteous granted. / The Saints Priviledge and Profit. / Christ a Compleat Saviour in his Intercession. / The Unsearchable Riches of Christ. / The House of the Forrest of Lebanon. / A Description of Antichrist and his Ruine. / Books formerly Printed. / Saved by Grace. / A Map of Salvation and Damnation. / Christian Behaviour. / Pray with the Spirit, and Understanding. / The Strait Gate. / Some Gospel Truths Opened. / Light for them in Darkness. / Instruction for the Ignorant. / The Holy City, New Jerusalem. / The Resurrection of the Dead. / Collected and Printed by the Procurement of his Church and Friends, and by his own Approbation before his Death: That these his Christian Ministerial Labours may be preserved in the World: / Together With / A Large Alphabetical Table, containing the Contents of the Whole. / London, / Printed, and are to be Sold by William Marshall at the Bible in Newgate-street. 1692.” � At the bottom of the title page, below the imprint, one finds the following curious note: � “Whereas it was proposed to the Subscribers, that his Book would contain near a Hundred and Forty Sheets, they are hereby certified, that by reason of the smallness of the Writing of the Manuscripts, it could not be so exactly computed; so that it is now about 155 Sheets, which additional sheets advance the price to about 1 s. 6 d. more in a Book, of which only one Shilling more is Required of the Subscribers, with which it is hoped they will not be displeased.” � John Bunyan (1628-1688) was amongst the most influential Protestant preachers in 17th century England, and is of course most famous for his immortal “Pilgrim’s Progress,” which Benjamin Franklin thought likely to be the most widely read English book outside the Bible.
