(16.4 x 18.3 cm) Styria Studio (Printer); Experiments in Art & Technology (Publisher) In original portfolio sleeve with artists name in block letters, on Crane's Bond Paper #1, MINT condition Here is an uncommon opportunity to acquire a famous original limited edition hand signed and numbered silkscreen by renowned American sculptor John Chamberlain . (b. 1927), one of the most important modernist sculptors in the world. Recently, there was major exhibition of Chamberlain's sculptures at Gagosian Gallery in NYC, and the artist made headlines because two powerhouse galleries - Pace and Gagosian were vying to represent him. In 2008, one of Chamberlain's sculptures sold for $ 1.1 million at Christie's , and a painting of Chamberlain's sold at public auction for 4.5 million dollars, and they continue to achieve high watermarks at auction. Chamberlain is well known for his use of festive color and found materials. His work is rooted in the tension of the abstract expressionists, and exhibits the flow, the chance and the Neo-Dada noise of Fluxus. Chamberlain’s works have been featured in major exhibitions, including the São Paulo Art Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. His sculptures continue to reach high watermarks at auction, with works selling for over a million dollars. In 1993 Chamberlain received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture from International Sculpture Center and also the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1997 he was awarded National Arts Club Artists Award. Though he is most well known for his innovative sculptures incorporating fragments of crushed automobiles, John Chamberlain is also a highly accomplished graphic artist. This print is from the legendary New York Collection for Stockholm Portfolio, issued to commemorate the collection of paintings and sculpture by top New York artists of the 1960s, assembled by Hultén and Klüver for the Moderna Museet Museum in Stockholm. The roster of artists included is a who's who's of the New York art world during one of its most influential decades: Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Walter De Maria, Jim Dine, Mark Di Suvero, Dan Flavin, Red Grooms, Hans Haacke, Donald Judd, Elsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt, Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, Kenneth Noland, Claes Oldenburg, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and others. It rarely seen at public auction, because so many of the prints from the portfolios, as well as the complete portfolios, are in major museum and public collections around the world - like MOMA, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian American Museum, Moderna Museet, the Walker Art Center - to name only a few.
