He was known for the harmonious color schemes of his tonalist landscapes, and his delicate glazing technique to create the subtle atmosphere of a tranquil inner forest under snow. Beginning in 1907, he taught at the ASL"s summer school in Woodstock, NY (dir., 1911-18). In 1913, he married artist Margaret Goddard of Plainfield, NJ (where he also continued to teach for many years). He was co-founder of the Broadmoor Art Acad., Colorado (1920-22); and founder of the John F. Carlson Sch. Landscape Painting, Woodstock, N.Y. (1922-38).
