John George Brown (British/American 1831-1913). Both are signed (lower left) J. G. Brown, 1859. "Portrait of Mary Warren Buttle", 1859. "Portrait of Samuel Buttle", 1859. Both are oil on canvas. Both are 27" x 22" on oval stretchers. John George Brown was born in the United Kingdom in 1831. He moved to the US in 1853 where be fast became famous as an artist of street urchins, shoeshine boys, and other 19th century city scenes. These are portraits of Mary Warren and Samuel Buttle, British immigrants who came to the United States circa 1850. The family stated that Mr. Buttle was fairly prosperous and owned a company which manufactured hats and, in particular, straw hats that were sold mainly in the Southern, slave holding, states.
