John Gilbert (English, 1817-1897) "Rosalind", d rawing-watercolour , ink, pen, pencil/paper , offered without reserve. We are on the move! Due to a new job in the South West, I am in the sad position of being forced to sell a flat absolutely full of paintings. Hung on walls, stacked up in corners, behind the sofa, piled on top of wardrobes - if there was a space, it was filled with paintings! Some of these I bought decades ago, others more recently - but they have all been photographed, and moved to a storage unit where at least there is room to pack them up and store them prior to shipping. Most are pet projects - paintings of interest and potential which I have promised myself to research, and after years in some cases, they remain gathering dust - but now everything's got to go in a matter of weeks - so they will be listed as fast as my two fingers can type in the next few weeks. This is a quite outstanding drawing of the character Rosalind from William Shakespeare's popular comedy As You Like It replete with such wonders as the famous "All the world's a stage" speech. The character Rosalind is simply charming - which would make this a delightful gift. Gilbert's delineation of her is totally fitting - she seems wistful, romantic. It is possible to imagine she would bedazzle in this outfit for the woods, each tree carved with her name. This is absolutely guaranteed NOT to be a print or an overpainted print. It is an original drawing. Condition is fine. It shows signs of age and the mount is torn in places. The drawing is a good size, measuring 32 x 22cm (13 x 9"). With the mount, it comes in at a respectable 42 x 32cm. Sir John Gilbert taught himself art by copying prints. He also produced myriad illustrations for books, including nearly all the important English poets. His illustrated Shakespeare has nigh on 750 drawings. His drawing-watercolours are popular in auction and fetch good money as can be seen from the list of prices realised below: The Iris (1869)Drawing-Watercolour , Watercolour, pencil, gum arabic, heightened with gouache/paper (45.2x29.2 cm) Estimate GBP 3,000 - 5,000 Christie's , London UNITED KINGDOM , 6/16/2010 USD 4,431 Battle of Agincourt (1872) Drawing-Watercolour , Watercolour, gouache/paper (33x43 cm) Estimate USD 2,000 - 3,000 Tiroche , Herzliya Pituach ISRAEL , 1/19/2008 USD 2,200 A really wonderful drawing by an important and well listed Shakespearean sir, offered as usual without reserve. Also - within the UK - FREE postage, packing and insurance. Please note - there is a circular patch approx 4cm diameter centrally towards the bottom which appears to be a disc where the surface of the paper has been torn off. I am not sure if this occurred before the drawing was created - it has been exceptionally well covered up. More likely I suppose it has been repaired following damage - but it has been well done - please have a look at the photos. It is away from the face and does not detract.
