JOHN THOMAS YOUNG GILROY (1898-1985). LOVELY QUALITY PASTEL AND PENCIL PAINTING ON PAPER THOUGHT TO BE PORTRAIT OF LADY MOUNTBATTEN HOLDING A ROSE. SIGNED GILROY LOWER RIGHT AND TITLED LADY MOUNTBATTEN BY GILROY ON REVERSE. WITH DOUBLE MOUNT AND GLAZED GILT FRAME. THIS PAINTING WAS FOR SALE IN CHRISTIES AUCTION IN LONDON ON16TH JUNE 2000 LOT NUMBER 149. SEE ARTPRICE FOR DETAIL. From the Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945 by David Buckman. John Gilroy 1898-1985. Painter and teacher born in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was for some years on the staff of Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. Gilroy studied in Newcastle and then at the Royal College of Art and on the continent. Showed extensively at Fine Arts Society, also RA, ROI, RP and Manchester City Art Gallery, public Galleries in Belfast, Hull and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle holds his work. In 1998 a centenary exhibition which toured from the Laing, organised by the History of Advertising Trust, showed Gilroy's many Guinness stout posters, featuring toucans, a sea lion, an ostrich and other animals; his World War II posters for the Ministry of Information, such as Careless Talk Costs Lives and Dig for Victory; and portraits of the Royal Family, Winston Churchill and John Gielgud. Gilroy was a Chelsea Arts Club member who lived in London, but died in Guildford Surrey.
