John Glenn Friendship 7 Launch Photograph Signed by Launch Pad Leader Guenter Wendt! Mint! From the very first flight of the fledgling space program Guenter Wendt was the legendary Pad Leader. He was in charge of the âeoeWhite Roomâe, a small room w the technicians worked on the Mercury capsule and from which the astronaut(s) entered their spacecraft. On February 20, 1962, Guenter assisted John Glennâe(tm)s ingress into the Mercury capsule âeoeFriendship 7.âe The event was carried on live TV around the world. The successful three-orbit flight was Americaâe(tm)s first orbital mission and catapulted John Glenn all the way to the U.S. Senate. Wendt would continue to be the Pad Leader all the way through the Apollo program. He was the last man who shook the hands of the astronauts before the hatch was closed. His duties were featured on the HBO Special From the Earth to the Moon in the episode titled, âeoeWe Have Cleared the Tower.âe (Wendt even had a cameo appearance in the film.) The astronauts trusted Wendt with their very lives. His discipline was legendary. His bravery was tested on each mission as he and his colleagues worked above a fully fueled rocket that, in the case of the Saturn V, had the explosive power of a tactical nuclear bomb. The close out crews of the Space Shuttle flights are the legacy of Wendt and his colleagues. read more
