1. Great Shrike - Collurio Excubitor 2. Lesser Grey Shrike - Collurio minor These lithographs are from Volume 2 of John Gould's The Birds of Europe , originally i ssued in parts between 1832 and1837 . The fi rst edition was 5 volumes, folio size with 448 hand-coloured lithographed plates, the majority drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould from sketches and designs by John Gould and the remainder drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear. In these prints, the bird is the only focus of the image, with a sketchier background, giving them the air of being a watercolour study or drawing. Such exquisite delicacy is the hallmark of this work. Gould’s biographer, Isabella Tree says, “It was Lear’s example that provided the impetus for the Gould’s first publication, and it was Lear who later transformed Gould’s static and unimaginative style into the confident and innovative work that characterized his second and all subsequent publications.” Size: approximately 22” x 15” Condition: Near fine and includes original text pages.
