Hawkins Autograph Letter Signed John P. Hawkins Autograph Letter Signed " John P. Hawkins, Brig. Maj. Genl. U.S. Army. " One page, handwritten document, measuring 7.8" x 6", dated March 25, 1864, from the Headquarters of the First Division of U.S. Colored Troops. Hawkins was a well-known Union general during the Civil War. He is most famous for commanding an all black unit. This letter contains content relating to the movement of a "colored unit." It reads in part, " You will cause the forty ninth regiment U.S. Infantry (colored) to move at and with this camp and garrison? " The letter is in fine condition; the ink is as dark and crisp as the day it was written; the usual folds are present.
