A delightful oil on canvas of a lively checker game, painted and signed by Sag Harbor, NY contemporary painter, John Philip Capello. Mr. Capello is also a very talented sculptor whose life-size sculptures are highly collected and exhibited. The painting is in excellent condition, mounted and framed, size of visible art, 27 1/2" height by 33 1/2" width. Below is a short summary from the gallery which carries his work:
John Philip Capello, who lives in Sag Harbor, NY, is a self-taught sculptor and painter with a classical mastery of his craft and a romantic intuition. He is a direct carver, who begins each piece without sketching or even knowing what form it will take, but determining to find out "what the stone wants to say. " The result, after months of painstaking labor, is always startlingly lifelike but at the same fantastic, often a blend of human and animal or plant forms on a theme from ancient mythology or history.
