Offered is John Speede’s very beautiful map of ‘The Kingdome of Scotlande,’ probably the most famous and most sought-after of all printed maps of Scotland, printed at London in 1610, sold by Speede and George Humble, with early 17th century hand-colouring, framed and glazed, and with English text on verso. The imprint at the lower right corner reads as follows: “Performed by Iohn Speed and are to be sold in Popes head alley by Iohn Sudbury and George Humbell / Cum Privilegio. 1610.” Aside from the cartouche in the upper left corner and the imprint in the lower right, the map shows insets of the ‘Yles of Orknay’ and portraits of the four members of the Stuart Royal Family – King James, Queen Anne, Prince Henry (Prince of Wales) and Charles Duke of York and Albany (later King Charles I). The map is geographically accurate, the engraving is of the highest quality, and early 17th century hand-colouring is very fine. The map is in excellent condition, with a strong impression and fresh colours. The text on the verso is in English and is titled “The Type of the Famous Kingdome of Scotland, with a Generall Description of Sundry Things Remarkeable Therein.” The map measures 540 mm by 420 mm; it is framed and glazed. The rear pane of glass is cracked at the upper left corner, not affecting the map and not materially affecting the integrity of the frame. In all, this is a highly desirable example of John Speede’s very beautiful map of ‘The Kingdome of Scotlande,’ probably the most famous and most sought-after of all printed maps of Scotland, printed at London in 1610, sold by Speede and George Humble, with early 17th century hand-colouring, framed and glazed, and offered at a reasonable reserve. Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
