Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN WALKER," Washington, D.C. origin, circa 1830, ovoid jar with squared rim and arching tab handles, decorated on the front with a large Alexandria-style floral motif, featuring a circular flower blossom flanked by leafy trails. Reverse decorated with three cobalt leaves. An additional cobalt leaf brushed under one handle. Impressed with rare "JOHN WALKER" maker's mark below rim on front. This jar, which is one of the finer pieces of Walker stoneware to surface in recent years, is a great example of the decorative influence of the Wilkes Street Pottery in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. One handle appears to be fully restored. Restoration to section of opposite handle. Small rim chips, mostly on reverse. Small in-the-firing chip to base. H 10 1/2".
