DIVINE PAINTED BALTIMORE SCREEN New unused condition! Fabulous? No. DIVINE! Perfect campy gift for fans! Got this in Baltimore, hon! In the ultra hip and trendy Hampden neighborhood from the shop formerly known as “Hometown Girl.” This painted screen is of John Waters’ film star and gay drag pop cult icon, DIVINE! The reverse of the miniature screen says: DIVINE 1946-1988 BALTIMORE, MD It is signed and dated on the back: JENNY CAMPBELL ’04. The artist has since moved to New Orleans, I understand. Jenny Campbell has a website and has exhibited at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore, MD. She is known/self-proclaimed as “The Bad Girl of Screen Painting” among locals who know the art form. Baltimore painted screens were a practical row home, working class decorative feature that helped air circulate through homes during hot months while giving the eye something to focus on from the outside—the effect is that passersby can’t really focus well on what is on the other side of the screen. So it provides privacy for the residents inside when their home was opened up for air…. There are Baltimore society websites about the art form and decorative tradition if you want to find out more about it. This is a hand painted rendering on a mesh window screen of an iconic image of DIVINE! The exterior is a little less than 7 inches
