When one thinks of the Indianapolis 500 there are always a few names that immediately come to mind. A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, Mario, Parnelli, and Johnny "Lone Star JR" Rutherford, but to those of us seniors who followed these legendary pilots on the USAC Champ Car series back in the 60's and 70's, it wasn't just Indy we watched. Back then the Championship Trail (hence, "Champ Car" series) also included some short track races, both on asphalt and on dirt. A wonderful combination of events requiring any driver who aspired to the series championship to be capable of driving at least 3 different types of cars on different tracks. To some of us, the dirt tracks were often the most thrilling and challenging. Imagine a World of Outlaws event today, but without those huge wings and yet the competitors sliding wheel to wheel in some of the most beautiful purpose-built cars ever created. Best of all, you could actually see the drivers at work, sawing the steering wheel through the turns. At least to my mind, there are few race cars more classicly beautiful than the big sprinters of that era. Even modern Sprint cars pay homage to their forebearers if you look at the tails of them as they slide through the turns.
