service pieces from a long retired dinnerware pattern Old English JB-33 Covered Vegetable Bowls with Lids Set/2 from Johnson Brothers the bowls are beautiful, but the pattern is a bit of a mystery Welcome to Simpler Times Antiques! Here today for your consideration we're pleased to offer this lovely pair of covered vegetable service bowls with lids from Johnson Brothers. These bowls were made using the Old English blank that was a favorite for many years and can be found with countless Johnson Brothers patterns adorning it. This pattern, however is a bit of mystery. Our bowls are marked with the name of the style or blank, but not the pattern name. The only pattern identification we've been able to find is that used by Replacements Ltd., a popular china replacement firm, who designated this pattern as JB-33. That is their designation only and speaks nothing as to what Johnson Brothers may have actually called this pattern. Design elements here include rope edge blanks with creamy white glaze. Decor consists of yellow banding with roses and floral transfer decoration plus generous applied gold accents. It's a beautiful and elegant pattern that we believe probably dates from the 1940s or 50s. The Johnson Brothers mark on the bottoms of these bowls has been in use since about 1913. Our bowls have a rim diameter of about 9.25" and a height of about 3" at the handles. Overall height with covers in place is about 4.5" A close look here shows that while our two bowls are matching pieces, one seems to have received the bulk of the use. The first bowl is in great condition. It and its lid are free from any chips, cracks, or repairs. Applied decor is bright and crisp and there seems to be little if any discernible wear. The second bowl doesn't show quite as well. You'll note a visible hairline crack in its cover pointed out in our photos by red arrows. Additionally there is noticeable wear to the floral decor on the interior bottom of that bowl. As stated, that one was well used. To their credit, both bowls are free from any crazing, staining, or discoloration. We found no hard water film on either. Both retain virtually all of their applied gold as we found no noticeable loss or wear of that decoration. If this is your dinnerware pattern then this is a great opportunity to add serving pieces to your service. This is a difficult pattern to find and will only become more so in the future.
