DESCRIPTION: For sale is an early wood sculpture of a mother and child (possibly a modern interpretation of the Madonna and Child) by renowned Filipino sculptor Jose P. Alcantra. High relief, wonderfully carved, the mid century modernist approach to the figurative subject has religious overtones but is rooted in a traditional working class form. The large three dimensional basket atop her head could be the artist's representation of a halo. Wood burned stamped signature on the bottom. The last "A" in his name and the end of the word "Philippines" underneath have been worn with age. I belive the hole in the center allows the sculpture to be mounted on a base from the underside. Shipping fee to the Philippines is $65.00 (see below). ABOUT THE ARTIST: Jose P. Alcantra (born 12-15-11) in Pasay City . He trained as an apprentice in woodcarving with Gonzalo Puyat .
