HUNGARIAN GYPSY FAMILY." BACKMARK. "CHAS. EISENMANN, PHOTOGRAPHER, 229 BOWERY, NEW YORK." We found mention of this family, online, in an excerpt from the New York Times that was published on August 9, 1884. The CDV features 5 members of the family, the excerpt mentions an additional 2 people: “REFORMED FORTUNE TELLERS. For several days past a family of Hungarian gypsies have attracted considerable attention in Castle Garden. The family consists of Joseph Freier, his wife and three children, and his mother and brother. They dress in loose, gay, gypsy fashion, and are quite dark. Joseph said that they were formerly fortune tellers, but that they proposed to earn on honest living in this country.” SIZE. Approximately 4 1/8 x 2 1/2 inches.CONDITION. Photo and mount, front and back, are heavily soiled. Very tiny piece of image missing at center of top edge. Mount has bumped upper left corner. Caption at bottom is almost completely faded away. Backmark is also faded. APPEARANCE. Soiling is apparent. Still, CDV has good details to the outfits. Nice lighting to the faces of the seated girls. A unique and rare image.
