The Carlisle Magazine, July 27, 1776. Published in England Although published on July 27, it's a reflection on how slow the news traveled at that time that t's no news of the Declaration of Independence yet (darn!). But still some interesting and historical news on the Revolutionary War and the Colonies. A SAMPLING OF THE CONTENTS: One article: "Thoughts on the present Sate of American Affairs" states "this author directly and undisguisedly urges the Colonies to a separation from Great Britain." And he lays out his arguments including: "Our corn will fetch it's price in any market in Europe, and our imported goods must be paid for, buy them w we will." And: "The blood of the slain, the weeping voice of nature cries, 'Tis Time to Part'. Even the distance at which the Almighty hath placed England and America, is a strong and natural proof, that the authority of the one, over the other, was never the design of Heaven." And an update of the troops in America: "The troops that will serve in America this campaign will be divided as follow: Under General Howe--34,614, General Carleton-- 13, 377, General Clinton--3,397............A gentleman from Halifax says, that before General Howe failed, a number of New England Men had come over to him, who gave a terrible account of the want of clothes, arms, tents and camp equipage in the Provincial army." And "Copy of a geniune letter from an Office under General Howe, dated Halifax, June 13, 1776: I am once more with the army on board the transports (in conjunction with that under lord Howe) waiting for a fair wind to carry us to New York, or someplace qeually strong, and w we expect some oppostion. In most peoples opinion it will not be a very violent one, for it is very certian that we are now numerous enough to overrun the whole continent of it, if necessary and that thousands of the Rebels are to join us.................In short, t is very little doubt, as the Provincials in general are alike credulous, timid and errsolute, but that we accomplish the business we are sent out upon before Michaelmas Day*." *Sept 29 in the UK. "American Contoversy " w the author really talks negatively about the Monarchy's ditary sucession and says: " Another evil which attends ditary succession is, that the throne is subject to be possesssed by a minor at any age; all which time the regency, acting under the cover of a king, have every opportunity and inducement to betray their trust. The same national misfortune happens when a king, worn out with age and infirmity, enters the last stage of human weakness. In both these cases, the Public becomes a prey to evey miscreant, who can tamper succesfully with the follies either of age of infancy."Lots more details and other articles including: "On the Manners of Women in warm climates", "Reflections on Eloquence", "A General Dictionary of Husbandry, Planting, Gardening, etc. "A" CONDITION: Approximately 5 by 8 inches, 32 pages, disbound, complete, front cover darkly toned/soiled with some edge wear.
