Extremely Rare NEWBORN Keichousaurus huiThis auction is for the serious collector who takes pride in having the "best of the best" and/or the rarest of pieces....If you have followed my auctions last year you would have seen an extremely rare Dernbachia brasiliensis fossil tree fern, a 60" fossilized sawfish (Micropristis) and other rare, unusual, or stellar pieces.I have prepped dozens of these (what was originally spelled) Kueichousauruses, having looked through about 1000 of these plates over the years. There is a wide variation in the stability of the fossil and the fossil plate. Some you can scratch a hole in with your fingernail and others are very hard and very stable. This plate is a medium grade plate and the larger fossil is only of average quality but you are purchasing this plate for the NEWBORN, nickel sized specimen . This is so small and yet so amazingly preserved in finite detail! I was able to uncover this using a very week nitric acid applied over a week's time. The area was then treated several times with baking soda to neutralize the acid in the matrix. If you win this auction you will have a specimen that would have great palaeontological significance. In the next couple of paragraphs I want to clarify some misconceptions that the internet fossil buyer has about fossils from China and about Kueichousauruses. I can tell you with SOME assurance that this is from the Ghuizou Province in China. This was the only area that they were finding these fossils about 12 years ago. Any more specific than that would be erroneous. In fact, for any K-saurus for sale, I would give it a one out of three chance that it actually came from the location that you're told. There is little if any traceability as these change hands and get mixed in with all the others. Also, the Communist government in China continues to change boundaries, province and city names to erase ties back to a non-communist China. Names have been shortened or simplified and not uncommonly, changed.On other auctions you've probably seen the words BABY to describe K-sauruses that are 4"-6" long and also 13" long. And the descriptions say that these FULL GROWN Keichousauruses were SMALL, normally 6" to 12", and if they are an inch or two bigger, they are considered to be HUGE. This is all wrong. These are really all a bunch of kindergartners. In my dealings with the Chinese importers, I have seen two plates with (what I might reasonably assume to be) the real adult measuring OVER 5 FEET IN LENGTH.One last comment about this plate. It was not quarried. You can see that the plate has been exposed to weathering. You can see the calcite lines through the plate which is quite common. This occured when cracks in the matrix were filled in with a calcite solution. It is a great way to tell if the specimen is authentic as the calcite fills in the area where the crack goes through the actual fossil. On the back side of the plate the (harder) calcite is raised because the shale has flaked away around it. Even so, this is still a VERY STABLE MATRIX.The plate is about 9-1/2" x 13-1/2", and the thickness is about .4". The newborn, if straightened would measure about 1.6" long and the larger unprepped specimen about 12". This brings up another interesting point that makes this specimen unique . Unlike other plates that are flat (denoting deeper water), this plate is wavy/undulating denoting shallow water which would make sense with a newborn of this size !If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, and please, do your research to verify how extremely rare this specimen is. Also, I package to the extreme to make sure that nothing happens to your piece.
