This is a good quality but older hand printed silver halide reproduction photograph, not a digital inkjet print (custom printed in a darkroom from a negative, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' surface semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper, and mounted on an 8x10 inch backing board) of two of the Kahanamoku brothers and friends in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel circa 1935? Left- right: Harry Robello, Blue Makua, Turkey Love, David Kahanamoku, Ox, Curley Conley, & Louie Kahanamoku. Known as the 'Father of Surfing', Duke was born in August 24, 1890. named after his father, who was named by the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited Hawaii in 1869. He was also a world famous Olympic swimmer, held world records, won gold medals, and competed in the Stockholm (1911), Antwerp (1920), and Paris (1924) Olympics. Surfers around the globe credit him with introducing surfing to the Mainland and Australia in the years 1912-14. In 1911 he started the Hui Nalu surf club. Duke rode massive koa wood boards, 16 feet long and weighing over 100 pounds. In 1917 he rode a thirty foot wave for over a mile at Waikiki. In 1960 he was appointed 'Hawaii's Ambassador of Aloha'. He was also inducted in the swimming and Olympic Hall of fame and was Sheriff of Honolulu (1934-60). He died a Hawaiian surfing legend Jan 22,1968. He was read more
