The Ens family were prominent in the porcelain business in Volkstedt in Thuringia, Germany (part of East Germany after WWII). In 1899, Karl Ens jr. left his fatherâe(tm)s company and, together with his sons, founded a new firm: Porzellanfabrik Karl Ens. The company was nationalized in 1972 as VEB Unterglasurporzellanfabrik (1972-1974) and later was part of the VEB Sitzendorfer Porzellanmanufaktur (1974-1990) until it went private once again in 1990. The backstamp on this piece indicates it was made between 1919 and 1939. This lovely lady, dressed in a pre-WWI style, has exquisite ruffles to her skirt, bows on her neck and waist and flowers in her hair (which appear to be held on with marcasite pins!). The layering of this piece shows it must have taken many, many hours to create (layer by layer), then many more hours to hand-paint. The figure shows a painstaking attention to detail as shown by the intricate work of painting on flowers over the ruffles. This museum-quality piece is in mint condition. No chips, no crazing, no dings, no flea bites âe" absolutely nothing to mar itâe(tm)s gorgeous surface. Note that extra packing and insurance are included in the shipping and handling price.
