we are please to offer for auction a beautiful tessellated limestone with inlaid brass decorative box, attributed to 70's design icon karl springer. this beautiful box is covered in highly polished limestone tiles with an inlaid brass stringer detail, brass fittings and a mahogany wood lining. the box is unsigned, and i thought perhaps it was maitland-smith but in my resaearch i came across an almost identical box signed by karl springer and offered at $5000.00 by one of the top vintage modern galleries in the united states (see photos, url provided on request). since the signed box uses identical materials and construction techniques as the one we've offered for auction, ours was certainly made by the same craftspeople mr. springer used, if not specifically designed by karl springer himself. the box offered for auction is in excellent vintage condition, with one tiny flake to a corner, and another small spot on same side w the naturally porous limestone has lost has a tiny bit of material. the brass fittings have some slight tarnishing as well, but on the whole the box is shiny and extremely presentable. i've also included a detailed photo showing the amazing construction of both the signed box and the box on auction- note the mitered brass corners, finished nail holes w brass rim is attached, and seamless joinery of the tiles. besides the obviously different shape of the boxes, the only difference between the signed comparison, and the version on auction is the signed version's shagreen lining over the mahogany, and the brass nameplate inserted into the felt on underside of comparison box- other wise they are identical, so we're confident this box is also the work of the talented mr. springer (or at least his craftspeople working in his signature style). 8 1/4" x 5 3/8" x 2 1/2" high.
los angelesresidents are welcome to view any of our items in person. weare located near fairfax/olympic/pico- please email for an appointment. local pick-up is always preferred!!!!!! shipping: FREE domestic continental 48 shipping (insured). please allow 30 days handling time for all shipments (yes, you read it right- 30 days- we have a busy design practice and travel frequently, so we often can't ship any faster). in return for our horribly slow shipping time, we provide safe and secure packaging so you get your purchase in undamaged, as described condition. wouldn't you rather wait a little longer for a truly great item than get a box of broken junk in a hurry? we thought so. sorry, we do not ship internationally. shipping, when offered, is quoted at a flat rate so you know exactly the total amount you are actually bidding on an item- no surprises. if we can safely combine multiple purchases for shipping, we are happy to do so. if you use buy-it-now and plan to pick item up in person and pay shipping on your invoice, we will refund the shipping cost either via paypal or with cash at pick-up- whichever is the buyer's preference. more stuff: all sales are final- don't worry though, everything is as described (most people think better than described as we try to note any and all flaws, no matter how minor). you'll love your purchase- really! please ask any questions before the close of the auction, and don't panic if it takes a day or so for us to respond- sometimes we are away from home with no internet access but try to check in at least every 48 hours. all of our items are vintage, unless noted, so expect a little wear and tear. if you want something to look brand new, we suggest design within reach. old electric stuff should be checked by an electrician. we like people to see our items in person, and we have lots more stuff for sale that isn't listed on ebay. please call first, though- we are not a storefront with regular hours. ebay should be fun- we are nice and expect you to be too! don't bid and then not pay- not nice! (we hate to leave negative feedback, but we will if we have too!) remember, we ship sloooooowww, so be patient! our auctions often...
