Born in Kyoto, Shodo studied the art of yuzen dyeing, a traditional art craft in Kyoto, under the guidance of Yamamoto Sekkei. He also studied Japanese painting under Shibahara, though it was his teacher Kishyo who helped cultivate Shodo's original style of expression. His woodblock prints were published by Unsodo in the mid 1950's. ABOUT DAFFODILS The garden daffodil's ancestors come from the states around the Mediterranean Sea about 300 B.C. and it has been spread about by man ever since. The first extensive writing about daffodils was curiously by Mohammed during the 6th century AD. Between the 6th and the 16th centuries, daffodils were relegated to the wild, however about 1629 English gardeners took the daffodil out of the weeds and put it into their gardens. The daffodil has traditionally inspired poets, and even today, nothing connotes the renewal of spring as dramatically as a drift of fresh daffodils swaying in a meadow. William Wordsworth, the legendary British poet, perhaps said it best when he wrote of the flowers in his classic poem, “Daffodils”, published in 1804. This is the poem that so artfully describes the poet viewing “ten thousand” daffodils beside a lake, and is also the source of the phrase, “Dancing with Daffodils.” SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR OTHER WOODBLOCK PRINTS AND BOOKS ABOUT WOODBLOCK ARTISTS I ACCEPT PAYPAL, money orders, bank checks, and personal checks.
