Size: approx. 10.5" x 15.5" Condition: Fine, never framed, no flaws, uncirculated print Impression: Fine; made from the original blocks; although undated this is an early edition with the original Unsodo publisher's seals in the left margin Color: Fine, exceptional color; this print is crisp and has very strong color KAWARAZAKI SHODO is best known for his woodblock prints of flowers and other plant life. Born in Kyoto, Shodo studied the art of yuzen dyeing, a traditional art craft in Kyoto, under the guidance of Yamamoto Sekkei. He also studied Japanese painting under Shibahara, though it was his teacher Kishyo who helped cultivate Shodo's original style of expression. His woodblock prints were published by Unsodo in the mid 1950's. ABOUT WISTERIA Japanese wisteria was introduced to the west from Japan around 1830 as an ornamental. It was popular in the southern U.S. as a decorative addition to porches, gazebos, walls, and gardens. Wisteria is hardy enough to be found in New England, and a few areas farther north. Wisteria is a member of the Pea family, Fabaceae. The genus was named in honor of an anatomy professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Caspar Wistar (1761-1818). The genus includes ten species of deciduous climbing vines, two native to the southern United States and the others native to eastern Asia. Wisterias are vigorous, twining vines with wide landscape usage w space permits and gardeners are committed to keeping them in bounds. Among their attributes are hardiness, vigor, longevity and the ability to climb high. They are greatly valued for their large, pendulous flower clusters that occur in the spring. Flowers are pea-like and may be white, pink, lilac-blue, bluish-purple or purple in color. The fruit is a long, green flattened pod that is not particularly ornamental. The plant climbs by means of twining stems and has alternate, pinnately compound leaves. Older, established plants may have a twisted, woody trunk several inches in diameter. This wisteria has been grown from a cutting from a flowering plant and will usually begin flowering earlier than most plants grown from seedlings.
