THIS NICE KAYWOODIE AUTHOR IS HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE. The 4-digit model / shape number indicates that the pipe is probably of "pre-1936" vintage. Having the threaded fitment indicates that it's after 1925. So, I would put it at 80 years old-plus. It's in wonderful condition for its age. Actually in nice condition for any age.

The only flaws are a couple of bites on the bit in front of the lip, as seen in the photos. These do not penetrate the stem. The stem is remarkably free of discoloration.

This is my personal favorite shape, much like a Rhodesian but lighter weight. I haven't seen any other manufacturer with this exact shape and size. When I was a freshman in college, I had a professor who came to class with a pipe - I was much impressed and asked him about it. He told me it was a Kaywoodie Author (appropriate, it seemed, because he was a writer). Soon, I had one of my own. Ah, Nostalgia!

I clean and sanitize all pipes with alcohol and bowl sweetener, all the way from the bowl through the lip; as well as cleaning the exterior with a treated polishing cloth and wheel buffer.
