The intricate, paper compass dial is marked: "Lord Kelvin's Patent, No. 380 (The number is hand written) & Baird, Ltd, Magnetic Observatory in Glasgow dated Dec 28th, 1951. The certificate is kept in an envelope which reads: "Compass Certificate No. 31082. " (The number is hand written) A small paper bag labeled with the serial No. 52751 contains the "cap & point" (Pivot) for Lord Kelvin's Patent compass. (They are wrapped up in plastic as seen in the photo.) The top cover of the original cardboard that the compass card was sold in has blue and red Company labels. (This top cover is the only part from the original card board box that is still with the compass dial.) This is a very unique item. The condition of this rare, delicate compass dial near mint. It is exceptional that this dial still has its original certificate, cap and point and the top cover of the original box! I collect pocket compasses and related items. I have seen several unmounted dry card dials for sale over the years, but I am yet to see a dial with so much additional material in such wonderful condition. Early compass related prints and compass rose prints are briefly covered in my book, Compass Chronicles . Email me if you have any questions. Low opening bid. Reasonable reserve. This is an authentic, original item.
