Three Derby coins from the 1997 race, one gold, one silver and one bronze. One side of the coin reads "CHURCHILL DOWNS, FIRST DERBY 1875, 123RD DERBY 1997" and has a picture of two horses racing and a rose. The other side reads "KENTUCKY DERBY" and has a picture of a rose and a frontal view picture of a horse wearing the winner's garland of roses. The tradition was strengthened when, in 1925, New York sports columnist Bill Corum, later the president of Churchill Downs, dubbed the Kentucky Derby the "Run for the Roses." The garland as it exists today was first introduced in 1932 for the 58th running won by Burgoo King.Check out my other items !
