Here we have a Kenwood KD-1033 turntable. I recall back in the '70's (yes, I'm able to recall that far back!) this, along with the Pioneer PL-12D was regarded as one of THE budget/introductory decks to own. The reasoning was simple - it had a sprung sub-chassis that echoed the design of the Ariston RD-11, Thorens TD-160 and Linn Sondek LP-12 decks that were the darlings of the audiophile set of the day. Add to that a nice medium mass arm that could handle the moving magnet cartridges of the time, as well as modern ones, and was adjustable for tracking weight and bias and you had a simple, reliable deck that sounded great. As with all things simple and reliable (me!) they last well and this is no exception (not sure how well I've lasted though!). My kid, who has gone off to college now and no longer needs this deck, swears by it as his introduction to vinyl and the immersive experience listening to music on that medium can bring you. OK, so what is he using now if this is so great? Well, we are a 'vinyl' household and just as I got myself my new deck, he got my old Thorens TD-160/SME arm, so I guess he upgraded...
