First Crack Geodes Presents : The Keokuk Geode: Iowa's State Rock Location: Jacob's geode mine Description: chalcedony banded smokey quartz w/pyrites Up for bid is a small grapefruit size banded geode pair. The geode was opened using a geode cracker for a perfect 50/50 crack. This geode pair ranks in the TOP 5 for Rarity. Jacob's geode mine is the only place I've found and seen geodes like this. I find 4-5 geodes like this per trip, or 1 per 5 gallon bucket full. The geode has a smokey quartz base with an underlying white chalcedony band and oodles of tiny pyrite secondaries. This geode wall full of water when I opened it. Almost all the geodes I've opened that have water in them smell like sulfur, and have pyrite secondaries. It's an attractive display piece and a must have for the serious geode collector. Please visit my eBay store for more beautiful Keokuk geodes! The geodes measures 5" by 4.5" by 4" and weighs 2 pounds 12 ounces.
