BEAUTIFUL PAIR OF VASES

CERAMIC APPEALS TO COLLECTORS OF MID CENTURY MODERN AND VIENNA SECESSION KERAMOS - FACTORY SIGNED MADE IN AUSTRIA 11 1/2" TALL 7 " WIDE- FROM TIP TO TIP OF HANDLES Made by KERAMOS in Vienna,Austria see image depicting the KWK mark that represents Wiener Kunst Keramik. Their major competitor was Goldscheider. They have an interesting variance in color from one another. Both vases have a gun metal gray color at the base. The shade gradually becomes lighter towards the center of the vase. The curvy white handles are sturdy and add unique character to the vases. The previous owner of these vases said that one of the vases was professionally repaired for minor chips. We are not aware of which one of the vases has been repaired because it is not visible. This restrained geometric aesthetic of Viennese and German Art Nouveau was shortly to become the characteristic of modernist productions. In Austria, the avant-garde Secessionist movement adopted their work, with its simplification and functionalism. The Vienna Secession grew out of a dissatisfaction with the traditional practices of the Kunstlerhaus- genossenschaft; an association which could have been called the Vienna Academie. This reappraisal of the status of the applied arts became a fundamental issue in the Secessionist movement. Realizing the need to find craftsmen who shared their high standards and objectives if quality designs were to be realised. T was no strict coda or written philosophy attached to the Vienna Secession but to strive for "art as life" or an art which did not distinguish between 'great art' and the crafts, or art for the rich and art for the poor, was high on their agenda. The main representant of the secession were Hoffmann,Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Karl Moser, O. Wagner.
