Amalfi Coast limited edition serigraph by Kerry Hallam Serigraph, 1993 Paper size 32.5 x 46.75 inches Image size 26 x 40.375 inches In Amalfi Coast Kerry Hallam captures the romantic mood of southern Italy on a lazy summer afternoon. From the sun-splashed terrace of centuries-old cobblestones, we are invited to enjoy a breath-taking Mediterranean panorama. In the distance, sailboats cruise indigo bays exploring hidden coves and beaches. And beyond, the spectacular dips in and out of sight until it disappears into the haze where sea meets sky. Hallam uses a high viewpoint and simple terrace foreground to lure the viewer into his composition. With a classic palette of brilliant green, gold, and blue hues, he captures sunlight reflections and focuses our attention on intimate details. Slightly to the left of the image’s center we see an ancient Mediterranean villa, complete with arched doorways and orange-tiled roofs. This elegant dwelling, with its weathered exterior, fascinated Hallam. “I was struck by the character of this old villa,” he muses, “because it was not only an exquisite piece of architecture, but was someone’s home.” To the right of the villa, slender cyprus trees reach high above the white stuccoed villages which cling to the mountainside. While these villages may look precarious to us, many of them have been nurtured by these mountains for more than 2000 years. Kerry Hallam imparts a sense both of timelessness and spontaneity in his images through the use of bold colors, stark contrasts and illusion of depth. He uses brilliant oranges in the rooftops and flowerpots to complement the blues of the sea and foreground flowers. The resulting Amalfi Coast invites us to enjoy a moment of quiet calm while fulfilling our romantic spirit. Artist Biography Born and raised in Northern England, Kerry Hallam has gone on to become an impressionist master. Kerry showed early artistic talent when he won a six-year college scholarship to London University. In 1973 he moved stateside and settled in New England, establishing his first studio in Boston. In 1981, he opened a studio and gallery on Nantucket Island, where he continues to live and paint year-round. Kerry Hallam is as refreshing and spirited as his paintings and is famed for his power to evoke emotion. He creates enticing images through a bold, bright palette, captivating color harmonies, and opulence of light. Enthusiasm for his art is fully evident in Kerry’s vivid, windswept seascapes and timeless sun-dappled village scenes, inspired by 19 th century Post Impressionist painters Cezanne and Van Gogh. A critic once wrote: "From the fabled paradise of the French Riviera to the sparkling shores of Nantucket Island, contemporary Impressionist Kerry Hallam captures the sun-dappled splendor of treasured places in his captivating panoramas." Hallam's ability to reconcile the vibrant visual cacophony of truly sun-drenched subjects and bring them into harmony has not been seen since the work of Monet's last years. Hallam's paintings, particularly the landscapes, reflect such exuberance in the sensual delight of vision. Inspired by St. Tropez and the French Riviera, Kerry returns frequently to renew his spirit. “My vision continually directs me to serene and majestic panoramas.” Through innumerable one-man exhibitions, he has been honored by galleries around the world, having shown at exhibitions in Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, San Francisco and many other cities.
