This charming Kewpie juvenile feeding set was made by Edwin M. Knowles China Company in the early 1920s, possibly a bit earlier, under their Roma mark. It consists of a child's mug, cereal bowl, and a divided plate, all decorated with Rose O'Neill's adorable Kewpie characters. The 7-1/2" plate has Kewpies in each of the three sections. The decals have little if any wear, though the red ring around the rim does show some minor scratching. The plate has no chips, cracks, or damage but there is an underglaze firing flaw in one corner, shown in closeup in photo number 5. It occurred during manufacture and is a minor surface flaw completely glazed over. The 5-1/2" diameter by 2" high bowl has a design of three Kewpies in the bottom. The bowl is quite crazed with some staining on the outside and bottom and there is some decal wear though no chips or hairlines. The little cup or mug is 2-3/4" high, with a Kewpie doing a handstand on the front and a pair of embracing Kewpies inside near the rim. The cup has crazing and a repaired handle. All three pieces are made of heavy pottery with a yellow glaze and are marked simply "Roma" on the undersides. According to Kovels and other pottery books, the Roma mark belongs to Edwin M. Knowles China Company. Roma refers to the yellow body color. I have never seen it on any pieces that were not childrens read more
