The quarter has been produced since 1796. The choice of 25¢ as a denomination, as opposed to 20¢ which is more common in other parts of the world, originated with the practice of dividing Spanish Milled Dollars into eight wedge shaped segments. These fragments were known as Pieces of Eight. At one time "two bits", i.e. two pieces of eight, was a common nickname for a quarter and is also the source of the jingle "two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar." The Washington Quarter is a version of the U.S Quarter that has been minted since 1932, with the exception of 1933. The obverse has had two different designs. The first one was in mint from 1932-1998. A new design was put out in 1999 for the Statehood Quarters. It was modified by William Cousins.
