CORAL QUEEN CONCH! (Strombus gigas) Did you know that Queen Conchs are a protected species in Florida? Tfore, the shells can only be taken when the animal is gone and if the empty shell is not on a protected reef. This makes getting speciman shells very difficult since one seldom finds the operculum. Within days of the shell becoming empty, it becomes a home for ANY WATER INHABITANT looking for a place to live such as Brittle Stars, Fireworms, Shrimp, etc. Also, the wonderful interior begins to erode. Finding a "PERFECT" QC is a matter of luck and timing. Usually, if I find them in pristine condition, it is because they have just been cleaned out by a Horse Conch or another predator. This Queen Conch was found while I was snorkeling in the Atlantic Ocean in about 5-6 feet of water. The conch was newly gone, but several other water species had already taken up housekeeping in the shell. Even though the conch and other creatures appeared gone, I still cleaned the shell thoroughly in bleach and water. I also had to use dental tools to pick off the outside and inside calcium buildup. I enjoy the process and seeing the perfection of the shell emerge. However, it is a long task. Okay, to specifics. This gorgeous Queen Conch is just about 9 1/2" long. At its widest point, it is nearly 7". The shell is coral inside, fading to a cream. The fluted lip is a pale coral. The inside of this shell really glows when backlit (see picture). The outside coloring of the shell is mainly a pinkish-creamy-butterscotch. T are some worm pinholes on the lip which add pattern. The spire is unusually nice. Some of the knobs have eroded at the ends. All of those things, including the chipping on the lip, are common after a life in a natural ocean environment. Please study the pictures carefully. This is the shell you will receive. If you need more pictures or have questions, please ask. The bidding for this beautiful shell begins at $14.95. Shipping and handling (ebay, paypal, credit cards, boxes, etc.)is $10.95 via FedEx ground with $100 of insurance included.
