This impressive Buddhist statue was handcrafted nearly 70 years ago near Siem Reap, Cambodia, and is based on the Khmer designs found throughout the old Angkor Kingdom between the 10th and 13th centuries, which now includes most of Cambodia and parts of neighboring Thailand and Laos.

In Angkor tradition, many Buddhist deities were shown with male and female characteristics, which accounts for the feminine breasts and midsection and the overall androgynous makeup of this piece. The upper body area is nude, whilst the lower design reflects traditional attire of the period. The facial features are unmistakably Khmer, with the mysterious half-smile so evident in archaeological findings in the area.

This is a vintage early 20th century rendition, and not a 10th century piece of art, as some sellers would dubiously claim for similar pieces. Any such claims in this market should be highly doubted as truthful, as legally obtained artifacts of this size and quality, and from this period, are almost priceless. However, this is also NOT a concrete copy (as some "genuine pieces" are), but hard stone, sculpted in the same tradition as the originals, from the same materials, and from a single piece rather than a souvenir mold-pour. With this type of piece, it is important to be aware of the differences. This statue is securely museum mounted and makes a fantastic display piece.
