Megalodon, Pungo Formation, NC, USA Miocene Era, Approx. 10-15 million years old 4.52" x 3 1/2" ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ 's a super rare Meg for you high end collectors out t Huge Pungo Formation Meg, Lee Creek area, NC, it's an early to middle Miocene Meg, no cusps, but it's from the Chub/Meg transitional period, and a giant for both the time, and locality, Pungo rarely produces teeth of any real size, 2-3" is typical, at well over 4.5", this is a huge Meg for the area/age. A quick note on Pungo Formation teeth: Pungo teeth share many of the features that make the more common, while still quite rare, Yorktown formation Lee Creek teeth so sought after and valuable, but, all else being equal, Pungo teeth are approx. 100 times rarer than their still quite rare Yorktown counterparts, meaning, for every 100 Yorktown Lee Creeks, you will get about one Pungo, and, being an earlier/older formation, they tend to be smaller than Lee Creeks, so, a Pungo this big is really a huge tooth for this locality, it 's even big for a Yorktown, but you'll pretty much never come across a high quality Pungo this size outside of an old collection getting broken up. And now, back to the tooth... Beautiful light blue/gray enamel with some tan banding, I'd say the blue is actually more noticable in person, just beautiful color and enamel on this one. The root is exceptionally well formed, and super thick, a pleasing light gray/tan phosphate color, with a very prominent protruding brow above the bourlette, and speaking of bourlettes... You will not find a finer, higher quality, better preserved bourlette on a meg tooth, period, it is a deep chocolate brown color, as tight and dense as they get, about as close as you can get to perfection in a bourlette. Yes, t is the one small nick on the upper left side, and a few tiny others, but, the tooth is in terrific shape for a Pungo of this size. And, the tip serration is as good as they get, it literally sticks out like the proverbial needle. I also love the shape and overall form of this tooth, really beautiful. You aren't likely to find a 4.5"+ Pungo in better condition/preservation, if you do, you'll pay a fortune for it, as I said above they just don't really exist outside of a few very high end collections. Lee Creeks are rare, this tooth is much rarer. 's someone's chance to add a killer, giant Pungo to their high end collection, and even if you take locality and rarity out of it, it's still just a gorgeous Meg in its own right, with that great color, the shape, the killer root and that world-class bourlette. You won't be disappointed with this one, as always, you are free to return it no questions asked if you aren't 100% thrilled. Thanks for looking!
