King & Country DD037 "Airborne Flank Attack" WWII Normandy 1944 - 82nd Airborne Division, Normandy, 6 June 1944 Released 2003, RETIRED and SOLD OUT!*NEAR MINT CONDITION IN ORIGINAL KING & COUNTRY BOX* THIS SET HAS BEEN DISPLAYED IN OUR STORE, AND HAS HADSOME MINOR PAINT TOUCH-UPS, BUT IS IN NEWCONDITION (SEE PHOTOS) - ORIGINAL GREEN PLAIDCOLORED KING & COUNTRY BOX IS IN MINT CONDITION!These four(4) U.S. 82nd Airborne "AA - All American" troopers prepare to lead a flanking assault during the Invasion of Normandy. A kneeling trooper fires a .45 cal. Thompson sub-machine gun, while two other paras rush the enemy position... one prepares to throw a hand grenade and the other moves forward, his M1 Garand with bayonet at the ready position. A fourth kneeling paratrooper opens fire with his Thompson. Having flown over the English Channel during the early hours of 6 June 1944 ... these "All American" paratroopers are engaged in the Battle of Normandy and the liberation of France.HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division were dropped on the Cotentin Peninsula beginning around 01:30. The "AA All American" paratroopers mission was to protect the far right flank of the invasion in the Cotentin peninsula. It hoped to accomplish this by destroying road, and rail bridges over the Douve River and by securing the Merderet River crossing by occupying both sides. In addition, the 82nd Airborne forces were to capture and hold the town of Ste. Mere-Eglise by eliminating the German garrison stationed in the town. The capture and control of Ste. Mere-Eglise was vital to the success of the invasion because it straddled the main road between the towns of Carentan and Cherbourg. Due to the thick cloud cover the C-47s used to transport the airborne forces had difficulty flying in a tight formation, and many paratroopers were dropped far from their intended drop zones (DZ). Many planes came in so low that they came under fire from both flak and machine gun fire. Some paratroopers were killed on impact when their parachutes did not have time to open and others drowned in the flooded fields. Though extremely difficult due to a shortage of radios, the dense hedgerows in the bocage terrain and the marshes, 82nd Airborne forces were able to gather together into small fighting units and complete many of their assigned objectives.PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE ALSO INCLUDED AN ORIGINAL PAMPHLET FROM THE NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL located in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.Please note: the pictures that have been uploaded for this auction serve as part of the description.
