VINTAGE POSTCARD - EARTHQUAKE, JAMAICA 1907 At 3:30 pm, this photo was taken, just after an earthquake that shook Kingston, the capital ofJamaica, with a magnitude of 6.5 on Monday January 14th, 1907. It was considered by many to be one of the world's deadliestearthquakes recorded in history. Every building in Kingston was damaged by the earthquake and subsequent fires. The death toll was estimated to be between 800 to 1,000 people. Approximately 10,000 were left homeless and damages were estimated to be $25,000,000. Shortly after the quake, a 6 to 8 ft. tsunami was reported on the north coast of Jamaica. This card is an historic B&W image of the Royal Mail Office taken just after the quake. Printed on reserve: N. Richards Kingston, Jamaica Card is in near mint condition with no rips, tears or creases. Lightly penciled number on reverse.
