This peyote rattle probably Kiowa, certainly from Oklahoma, has commercial leather fringe attached to the end of the wooden handle. T is a gourd, good patina, with stones inside for the rattle. The imitation horse hair decoration at the end of the rattle is made of synthetic material. For this reason, we believe this traditional rattle dates to the 1960's. The beadwork done in blue, yellow, black, red and orange colors in a side stitch (often known as a peyote stitch) is in perfect condition. We believe rattles of this kind were used in Native American church rituals. The panel of beadwork at the end by the horse hair style decoration is done with cut beads which causes it to shine when turned. No doubt it would be mesmerizing if one was in a ritual setting after ingesting peyote. This rattle is 20 1/2 inches long. We are selling a group of rattles this week, please view.
