Founded in England in 1862, Kirby Beard & Co started as a razors and blades manufacturer but it quickly established itself as a Pan-European distributor of upscale decorative items and glassware. In 1900 it had 3 flagship stores in London, Paris and Berlin as well as other smaller outposts, and by 1935 Paris had become the company's main showroom and operation. Kirby Beard was one of the main style designers for the 1937 "Exposition Universelle" in Paris. The Paris store was located near the Opéra on rue Auber, a stone's throw from those of Baccarat, Daum and Lalique. After WW2, Kirby Beard remained in Paris until the late 1970's and then closed permanently. Here is an intact and very handsome orangeade set, a pitcher and six tumblers in sculpted glass, all in excellent condition. The decoration is elaborate as the whole surface is covered in an Art Déco sculpted motif sometimes described as orchids and sometimes as sea stars. A similar set with the same pattern was especially made for the legendary steamship "Normandie" but with inverted lines (base wider than the opening) so as not to tip-over in rough seas. Lone pitchers or glasses are sometimes offered at auction dedicated to steamship memorabilia. I have never seen a complete set for sale. The pitcher is 10" tall and 5" in diametre at the opening.
